Plein Air in Northern Minnesota

We headed to the cabin for a nice long weekend and I was excited to get some plein air painting in. Our dog Hunter has an obsession with water and loves to retrieve sticks. Believe it or not, he has competed in Dock Dog competition numerous years with his best jump length being 6 feet! Not bad for a little cocker spaniel. During this painting I would momentarily stop painting and grab more sticks to throw for him.  Which turned out to be very helpful as I got to step back and look at the painting with fresh eyes. This painting was very rewarding as I learned how to use hog bristle brushes which in another life would intimidate the heck out of me.  I enjoy how this painting came out and it now hangs in the cabin.

We used to call this island Dooby Island as youngsters.  We used to go out on our paddle boat, light a little camp fire and burn the end of wooden kebab stick and pretend to smoke them.  No actual doobies were ever smoked.  We would get in HUGE trouble if we were caught starting a campfire.  We spent lots of time fishing for bass off this island.  We learned if you tied your leech a little bit above the hook, you wouldn't loose your leech half as much. Because who wanted to put on yet another leech.
